I have a bad habit of keeping everything that I think I may need for the near future. This causes me to pile up clothes, books, or random objects around my house. There are days when it gets too overwhelming to look at, which makes me believe that it is time to let go of these unwanted items! As the snow is slowly melting away, Spring is upon us. Spring cleaning is a great way to make your cleaning habits more sustainable and eco-friendly! Let’s dive into some tips and tricks you can use to reduce your environmental impact while tidying up your space!
Cleaning Products:
Most cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can harm both you and the environment. To make eco-friendly cleaners, try using all-natural ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda. Also, try incorporating reusable items like microfiber cloths and sponges instead of single-use products or disposable ones. This helps reduce plastic waste and chemical pollution and allows you to contribute to sustainable practices.
Upcycling and Donating:
Try sorting through your belongings and deciding if there are any items you can upcycle and give a new life. For example, old pants could be upcycled into shorts for the summer, or you could also use your creativity by turning old shirts into tote bags! Although this might not apply to all your clothing, these little tips can keep items out of landfills and will make some difference to the environment. You could donate your unwanted clothes and items to charities, the nearest donation center, or community groups.
Jars and Containers:
Repurpose old containers such as jars and boxes to give them a new life! You don’t always need the new it and aesthetic item off of Winners, try using what you have around the house, which would otherwise end up in a landfill if left unused
Hazardous Waste:
Make sure to separate and compost organic waste properly instead of throwing them in the trash. This creates nutrient-rich soils for your garden. Hazardous waste should also be taken to special disposal centers or recycling depots. This includes any electronic waste or batteries.
Skip the Dryer:
During the warmer days, maybe consider air drying your laundry outside to reduce energy consumption. By skipping the dryer, it is gentler on your clothes, which helps make them last longer. So if you have some time in your hands, I recommend trying this once in a while!
Lastly, take a moment to go outside and have a breather. Maybe while you clean up, you find an old book that you used to love. Consider going to a park, have a walk, and read once in a while. Sometimes we get caught up with our work, and our fast-paced, busy lives, to take a moment and enjoy the nature that is made around us.
