Green it Forward: Giving this Season
Posted on November 18, 2024
Christmas has always been a big deal at my house. Somehow, my family finds ways to reduce waste during this season. From saving gift wrappers to creating DIY presents, our holiday traditions have a way of celebrating the season sustainably.
My mom loves reusing gift bags from past years and occasions, so we don't have to go to the store to buy new ones. Why buy new gift bags when keeping and reusing old ones can save time, money, and divert waste from the landfill?
Consider putting your DIY skills to the test instead of buying presents. These could be cards, scrapbooks, and more. I’ve had friends crochet gifts for me at Christmas, which I find really cute and meaningful. I always cherish the gifts that people take the time to make themselves. There’s something special about giving a DIY present; it’s a unique gift that can’t be bought anywhere else. It’s also made with love and intention—an intention to create something personal and thoughtful that shows just how much you care. The fact that it reduces overall consumption during the holidays is an added bonus.
Gifts are not limited to tangible items but can be experiences too. One present I always love to ask for is class passes to my favourite dance studio. Not only does this cultivate my passion for dance, but it also has a lower environmental impact and supports local businesses. Surprise your significant other with tickets to see their favourite musician, or give your mom a pass to that baking class she’s been eyeing. Even better, attend these experiences together. Sharing time and making memories with loved ones is one of the most meaningful gifts we can give. Material gifts may fade, but shared moments and quality time create lasting memories—something you simply can’t buy.
