Water Conservation
Water is such an essential part of living yet we waste so much of it without realizing it. This is caused by taking our sweet time in the shower, running the faucet a little too long when we’re brushing our teeth, or by even washing the dishes for an extended period of time. These small habits add up and can cause us to waste water. First let’s be educated about why it is so important to conserve water, followed by some tips to reduce water usage.
Canada Water Crisis:
Not many people know that Canada is going through a water crisis since it is one of the richest in water compared to other countries. Most people are fortunate enough to have water security that many people are shocked to hear that not all Canadians have access to fresh and safe drinking water when needed (Buggy, 2022). The indigenous peoples of Canada are affected by this especially; many First Nation communities lack the access to clean water and end up with water systems with different contaminants (Buggy, 2022). Raising awareness of this will hopefully encourage the federal government to take more actions to protect the water in Indigenous communities (Buggy, 2022). This is one of the many problems revolving around water; there are other matters such as the climate crisis, population growth that makes water scarcity a global concern.
Water conservation tips:
Doing our part and being conscious about how we conserve water can make a difference. Here are some ways that we can change in our daily routine that can help lessen the waste of water.
For indoors, try to shorten showers and keep the running of the faucet to a minimum by using only when it is necessary when shaving or when brushing your teeth. You can also wait to run your dishwasher when it is full rather than doing half loads for convenience. For the kitchen, you could try plugging the water or use a basin if you are washing dishes by hand. Doing so will help minimize your water waste and could also help with the water bill!
For outdoors, you can water your plants either in the morning or evening to minimize evaporation. You could also check your water sprinklers that they aren’t watering the sidewalks. You could also think about harvesting rain water by using barrels for your garden! Green Calgary offers a Barrel Sale for this exact matter. Since there is a high demand for these barrels, pre orders are sold out! Fortunately, you can get a barrel directly at Golden Acre Home & Garden. Visit the Green Calgary website for more information regarding the sale!
For a recap, being aware of daily water consumption, and educating others on a daily basis can help reduce overall water consumption. The little things we do will eventually add up and help not only the environment but also the community!
