A Letter to a First-Time Gardener: Your Small Garden Can Grow Something Bigger

Dear First-Time Gardener,

Maybe this is the year you planted your first tomato seed.

Maybe you started growing carrots, zucchini, or herbs like dill in your backyard. Maybe you only brought home your first houseplant and are learning how to keep it alive.

Whatever your starting point, welcome.

Gardening is not about creating a perfect garden. It is about curiosity, patience, and building a connection with the natural world around you.

And in Calgary, even the smallest garden can become part of something bigger.

A Garden Is More Than Just Plants 🌿

When people think about gardening, they often think about the final result: fresh vegetables, colourful flowers, or a beautiful outdoor space.

But a garden creates much more than food. It creates connection.

Gardening encourages us to slow down and notice the small things: the changing seasons, the insects visiting our flowers, the health of our soil, and the importance of water.

Across Calgary, residents are creating green spaces that bring people together. Community gardens provide opportunities to grow food, share knowledge, support biodiversity, and build stronger neighbourhood connections.

One example is the Legacy Community Garden in southeast Calgary. Created through community involvement, the garden brings residents together, creates a shared green space, and supports local biodiversity.

As one of Calgary’s newer communities, Legacy shows that neighbourhood growth is about more than new homes and infrastructure. It is also about creating spaces where neighbours can connect, learn, and grow together, helping build healthier, more sustainable communities.

Calgary’s Growing Gardening Community

If you are new to gardening, you might be surprised to learn that you are joining a growing movement.

According to the Calgary Horticultural Society, Calgary’s community gardening movement has grown significantly — from fewer than 11 groups in 2008 to more than 200 community gardens on public and private land today.

This growth shows that gardening is about more than growing vegetables or flowers. It is about creating healthier, more connected communities.

A community garden is often the first place where a newcomer to gardening becomes part of a community. It is a place where beginners learn from experienced gardeners, neighbours share resources, and residents work together to create greener spaces.

Calgary Is Helping Communities Grow

This growing interest in gardening is also supported by the City of Calgary.

The City works with community organizations to help create new community gardens on public land. Neighbourhood groups interested in starting a garden can connect with their local Community Association and learn about the application process.

New community gardens may also receive support from The City to help establish their growing spaces.

This support helps residents transform shared areas into places where people can grow food, learn together, and strengthen their communities.

Start Small and Grow Sustainably

Every gardener starts by observing.

Before planting, take time to understand your space. How much sunlight does it receive? Is it protected from Calgary’s wind? How does water move through the soil?

Gardening in Calgary has unique challenges. Our dry climate, changing temperatures, and shorter growing season mean that choosing the right plants can make a big difference.

Start with plants that match your environment. Vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, zucchini, and herbs can be rewarding choices for beginners. Native and climate-friendly plants can also support local pollinators, including bees and butterflies.

A sustainable garden is also about caring for the soil. Composting helps return nutrients to the earth while reducing organic waste sent to landfill.

Calgary’s Green Cart program collects food scraps and yard waste and transforms them into nutrient-rich compost that supports gardens and landscapes.

Your First Garden Is the Beginning of Something Bigger

Dear first-time gardener, give yourself permission to learn.

Some seeds will not grow. Some plants will struggle. Your first harvest may not look exactly as you imagined.

That is part of the journey.

One plant can support a pollinator. One compost bin can reduce waste. One conversation with a neighbour can inspire someone else to start growing.

Small actions create healthier homes, workplaces, and communities.

So plant that seed. Water it. Watch it grow.

Your garden is not only growing vegetables or flowers.

It is growing a greener Calgary.

Happy gardening!
