As you may know, the honeybees from the Community Hive Collab. Purchase come in May 13th, 2012. So, about a month after their arrival, I am offering a chance to see how they are doing!
On June 16th, 2012 from 12-4pm, Eliese Watson and A.B.C will be offering open house to come and view the bees, ask questions, and maybe do some hive manipulations with both Top Bar and Langstroth hives, like adding supers, maybe making a split, or observing queen cells. Queen Rearing Workshop 2012 Bill Stagg comes to YYC in June!
Event Date(s): Saturday June 16 and Sunday June 17 / 9am to 5pm each day
2011s Queen Rearinq workshop was a blast! Taught by Sam Comfort of Anarchy Apiaries, NY, the course was hands on and informative. This year we hope to offer the same great program but this time, taught by Bill Stagg of Sweetacre Apiaries BC. Not only is Bill the beekeeper that the Community Hive Collaborative Purchase receives its bees from but, Bill has a lot of beekeeping know-how! Bill has spent three years working for different commercial beekeeping operations, pollinating crops in the North Okanagan and the Fraser Valley and has also worked for a stock producer raising and selling queen bees and nucleus colonies. Bill then successfully completed the Bee Masters short course at SFU and the John Gates ‘Queen Rearing Course’. Shortly thereafter Bill took on employment with the Ministry of Agriculture as the local bee inspector for the Shuswap area.
Here is the outline for A.B.C’s Queen Rearing Course 2012: The purpose of this course is to develop competency and to educate hobby beekeepers in the art of rearing quality Honey Bee Queens for personal use or for sale. Click here if you would like to see the course outline and register!

Run for Biodiversity! Help us Run WILD for Food and Farmers in 2012!
Event Date(s): Sunday May 27, 2012
Are you a Runner or a Walker?
Are you looking for a way to have some healthy fun with family or friends, and make a contribution to a cause you believe in? Then, we may have just the right thing for you! We’re looking for runners and walkers to Run for Biodiversity in the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 5km or kids marathon.
* All R4B-Calgary runners and walkers who commit to raising $100 will receive a specially-designed Run for Biodiversity T-shirt in appreciation for their fundraising efforts.
* As a special thank you, the first 10 R4B-Calgary participants will be registered for free!
Where will Donations go?
All donations will go to support USC’s work in Nepal. Our R4B-Calgary goal is to raise $5,000 to support the community-based agricultural, biodiversity and environmental initiatives of our local partner, the Self-Help Initiatives Program (SHIP).
SHIP is working in extremely challenging conditions, helping farming families to survive and thrive in the remote Himalayan district of Humla, a 20-day’s walk to the nearest road!
Why Run for Biodiversity?
On May 22, USC Canada joins millions of people around the world in celebrating International Biodiversity Day. Biodiversity is all about food and farmers. It’s the earth’s life-support system, and nature’s brilliant insurance policy against disaster. If something fails, there’s a back-up plan: Biodiversity! Much is at stake for us all, and in a real sense, USC is helping farmers plant the Seeds of our very Survival
Thanks for Making a Difference!
Thanks to your generous support, USC Canada is able to help Nepalese farmers grow more food for their families, and to bring about lasting change in South Asia.
Please feel free let others know about this too. We’re hoping this year’s Run will have “legs!”

If you’d like to support USC’s work with seed-saving farmers in this way, please send an email to David Rain at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
