Thanks to Our Tree Heroes!

Posted on July 24, 2015

As you may know, Calgary sustained the loss and damage of over 1.5 million trees during last September's snowstorm. But Calgarians are pulling together to restore our urban forest! Over 60 donors came out last night to help plant the 143 trees they contributed to NE Calgary in the Taradale community (64th Ave & Tarington Road NE).

Our generous donors included:
Alberta Association of Immigrant Serving Agencies, Amaranth Whole Food Market, Andrea Rocchio, Andrea Urquhart, Anonymous, Anonymous, Anonymous, Anonymous, Azuma Hashimoto, Brookfield Properties - Bankers Hall, Catherine Jarrell, Dale Sorensen, DIRTT Environmental Solutions, Elements the Patagonia Store, First Capital, Fin-Wall Site Services, Firyal Mohamed, Future Values Estate & Financial Planning, James Roberts, Jennifer Rewcastle, Joan Spindler, Justin Wise, Karim Lalani, Katherine Zaiser, Kathy Holland, Kyle McLaughlin, Lauren Minuk, Lindsey Smilski, Marci Jensen, Marshall Ouellet, National Bank of Canada, Nature's Ride, Ox & Angela Tapas Bar & Restaurant, Patricia Rafuse, Patricia Stuart, Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd., The Spa Ritual/Sante Spa, Una Pizza.

How will their 143 trees add to the city's sustainability?

  • 143 trees will capture 143 tonnes of C02 in their lifetime
  • 143 trees will divert 1000s of litres of water from our stormwater systems annually
  • 143 trees will prevent soil erosion, cool a public space, and beautify a local park

Of course, we can't forget to thank our army of Green Calgary staff and volunteers who made sure we stayed organized, hydrated, fed, and safe.  A big thank you to them for all their help! Check out the pictures from the evening of donors, volunteers, and trees!

Didn't get involved in this project but would like to help re-tree YYC? Check out The City of Calgary's program to help Calgarians plant more trees!
